2025 Llewelyn 'The Wind is Blowing Through My Heart' Rose
I make a lot of rose, and none of it is either really straightforward or Provence-esque. I tend to think of it
as white wine, where I try to play on texture, weight and age if finances allow. If California is primarily planted
to red grapes, then somewhere in the sea of acreage there are sure to be red grapes that can pretend, if not
succeed, at providing beautiful “blanc” de noir. This is old vine Carignane from Lolonis Vineyards in Redwood Valley, up in Mendocino County. The Chardonnay is from Sonoma Mountain. Both were direct pressed
and blended together after primary fermentation in the late fall. They rested in American oak barrels for
about a year. Tasted blind I’d say its like my best white wines; salty, round with nice texture and a kiss of waxy fruit. I am really happy with this. There’s a big, wet kiss of almond and vanilla from the oak, and
enough fruit and acid to balance.
tl;dr: Sultry and lux rose of old vine Carignane and Chardonnay. Meyer lemon,
smokey framboise, seawater, tarragon, black tea bitterness.
